The Horry County Assessment of Fair Housing Plan is available for Public Comment

Horry County HOME Consortium AFFH Notice

The Fair Housing Act1 (the Act) declares that it is “the policy of the United States to provide, within constitutional limitations, for fair housing throughout the United States.”2 It does so by prohibiting discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings, and in other real estate-related transactions because of race, color, religion, sex, familial status3, national origin, or disability.4 5 In addition, the Fair Housing Act requires that HUD administer programs and activities relating to housing and urban development in a manner that affirmatively furthers the policies of the Act.6

Horry County, the City of Myrtle Beach (COMB), the City of Conway (COC), the Housing Authority of Myrtle Beach (MBHA) and the Housing Authority of Conway (CHA) are working together to promote public awareness of Fair Housing as a key to promoting fair housing practices and enforcement, by drafting a county wide Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) Plan.

The goal of the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) Plan is to take meaningful actions that, taken together, address significant disparities in housing needs and in access to opportunity, replacing segregated living patterns with truly integrated and balanced living patterns, transforming racially and ethnically concentrated areas of poverty into areas of opportunity, and fostering and maintaining compliance with civil rights and fair housing laws. The duty to affirmatively further fair housing extends to all of a program participant’s activities and programs relating to housing and urban development.”
