The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program is a federally funded housing assistance program that provides rental assistance payments to assist income eligible families rent safe, decent, sanitary and affordable housing at reasonable rental rates on the private market.
The Housing Authority of Myrtle Beach contracts with the Department of Housing and Urban Development for the funds to assist the eligible families.
Affordability: The purpose ensures that the housing is affordable and reasonable rent is paid in comparison to similar unassisted units. Family rental share should always be affordable because it is based on their household income.
Quality: Each unit must pass a Housing Quality Inspection and always be in compliance with program requirements. The program supports and promotes good quality housings.
Choice: Families have the right to select any eligible unit where the owner is willing and approved by the Housing Authority to participate in the program. The program supports and promotes housing choice for tenants and owners and community integration.
Who Are Housing Choice Voucher Holders?
New Admission: This family was selected from the waiting list and is using their voucher for the first time
Transfer/Move: This family is already receiving rental assistance on the program but wants to take their rental assistance and move into another rental unit within our jurisdiction.
Portability: This family was issued a voucher from one PHA but wants to use it in another PHA’s jurisdiction.

The rental assistance amount and family share of the rent for families is different with each family because of the following factors:
Contract and gross rent for the unit (rent plus utility allowance)
Family circumstances may change throughout the period between annual reexaminations.
The Housing Authority of Myrtle Beach requires participants to report changes in income, expenses, household composition, and student status in writing within 10 business days of the effective date of the change, not of receipt of payment. In order to add someone to the assisted household, the family must receive approval from both the Housing Authority of Myrtle Beach and the landlord prior to changing the household composition.
The change in circumstance may result in a change to the rental calculation and the tenant portion of rent and the housing authority portion of rent.
The Housing Authority of Myrtle Beach will mail written notification to both the landlord and the family regarding any changes.
- Pay the security deposit to landlord
- Pay their portion of rent directly to landlord in a timely manner
- Pay their utilities and services as obligated
- Report all changes in writing regarding household income, expenses, household composition, and student status to MBHA within 10 business days Change Form
- Cannot add household members without prior written approval from both landlord and MBHA
- Follow the rules in the lease and tenancy addendum
